The procedures were to the highest international standards, causing me no concerns despite the Russian Federation being listed by the NHS as a high risk area for cross infection. I was attended to personally by the Consultant Physician Dr. Alexander Zerntchenkov. There was a snack provided of boiled chicken, dry bread, half an apple and an apple juice drink. The hospital car picked me up from my hotel and drove me to and from the unit at no extra cost. The staff were friendly and efficient. Both Dr. Zentchenkov and his junior doctor spoke reasonable English. The cost was $240 (£130 or 190 euros) payable in cash or by bank transfer (not cheque or card).
The dialysis unit is situated in the center of St.-Petersburg (corner of Nevsky and Liteiny prostpects) in the City Nephrology center (Mariinsky Hospital) and equipped by new dialysis machines (since November 2003) TINA (Baxter) and new water treatment plant (Germany). They use synthetic (polyethersulphon) and semisynthetic (di- and triacetate cellulose) dialyzers and Nipro blood lines and needles. They work three shifts (4-5 hours) a day, six days a week (Sunday - on request with higher price). They use heparine or clexane, EPO (Epocrin - St.Petersburg, Russia), Venofer. (Also they have PD patients - on Baxter and Fresenius systems)
For your convenience they have a dialysis room with six machines with chairs, and a car for transfer from and to hotel.
They do not accept HIV-positive patients. They need to know if you have got any serological markers of hepatitis or history, your desirable dialysis schedule four weeks before your arrival and a short summary of your medical history from your doctor.
