Patients and others who wish to investigate the effectiveness of dialysis centers in the San Fernando Valley have access to a newly updated database online.
The nonprofit journalism organization ProPublica, which has entered a new partnership with the company that publishes the Daily News, has provided new information in its database that compiles a wealth of information from the federal government about the quality of care at dialysis centers. The statistics give insight to patients and those seeking more information about dialysis treatment into facilities' survival and hospitalization rates, transplants, infections and clinic conditions. The numbers are adjusted based on each clinic's patient mix - taking into account age, race, gender, duration of end-stage renal care, illnesses and other factors - for comparison to nearby clinics and the national average. Users can also access historical reports dating back to 2002. To access the data, visit http://projects.propublica.org/dialysis and enter your ZIP code to find nearby clinics. The U.S. government, which pays for most dialysis treatment through Medicare, has collected the data for decades, but it was used only to regulate inspections by state health agencies. The comprehensive data was first made available to the public on ProPublica's website in 2010 after the news organization obtained clinic records through the Freedom of Information Act. This year, the database includes numbers on patient visits to emergency rooms, which usually correlates with death rates. |
