Mulago National Referral Hospital has acquired 10 dialysis machines that are expected to provide huge relief to the victims of kidney disease.

The hospital has been using 4 machines only, attending to a maximum of 14 patients daily.

The hospital Executive Director Dr. Byarugaba Baterana says the newly acquired machines will enable the hospital handle 42 patients daily.

Dr Byarugaba says the hospital is engaged in negotiations with the National Medical Stores to supply the consumables used by these machines.

According to the Executive Director, the consumable are too expensive for the patients, costing each patient at least 200,000 shillings per week.

He says the hospital's renal unit will be greatly improved but calls for government assistance in reducing the cost of treatment.

Cases of kidney disease have increased in the recent past with at least 60 cases registered at Mulago Hospital alone every week.
