NEW YORK, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The Rogosin Institute (Rogosin) and the Hebrew Home at Riverdale (Hebrew Home) are collaborating to provide peritoneal dialysis training and nephrology medical management for the residents and rehabilitation patients at Hebrew Home. This is the first time residents and patients of Hebrew Home will have peritoneal dialysis training and services available on site. Rogosin and Hebrew Home are both members of NewYork Presbyterian Healthcare System.

Typically residents and rehabilitation patients requiring dialysis have to travel to a facility to receive dialysis three times a week for 3-4 hours each treatment. Now dialysis patients have the option to receive peritoneal dialysis (PD) conveniently at Hebrew Home. Hebrew Home will provide the nurses to help residents perform PD and Rogosin will be responsible for training and overall medical management of patients.

PD uses the thin membrane, called the peritoneum, which lines the abdomen, to perform dialysis treatments. During treatments, a cleansing fluid called dialysate is put into the patient's abdomen through a small, flexible tube called a PD catheter. PD benefits over traditional dialysis include more flexibility with a treatment schedule, less restrictive diet and lower healthcare costs due to less transportation and fewer hospitalizations.

"Up until now, like many other physicians, I have had no facility to which I can refer my patients on PD who require rehabilitation. This new collaboration provides a vital resource for patients who have difficulty traveling for treatments," said Roxana Bologa, M.D., director of PD at Rogosin. Dr. Bologa will be implementing and overseeing the program with Hebrew Home. Rogosin has one of the largest PD programs in the New York City area.
