TAMPA, Fla.—The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) announced today Harris Haith will serve as the keynote speaker at the 39th Annual AAKP National Patient Meeting on August 11, 2012.

The AAKP Patient Meeting is one of the largest events of its kind, bringing together kidney patients, family members and kidney health care professionals from across the country.

Haith is a singer/song writer and an award winning film producer and writer. His most recent book, Growing Up Laughing, in which he describes his childhood adventures with legendary actor/comedian Eddie Murphy and his brother Charlie, received national acclaim. Haith is also a kidney transplant recipient who continues to speak to kidney patients about hope, faith and being active in their health care.

“We are excited to have Harris Haith join us at the AAKP Annual Patient Meeting. He has a very accomplished career, and a wonderful story to share with our meeting attendees,” said AAKP’s Executive Director Karen E. Ryals. “I am sure the participants will walk away feeling inspired to continue to lead productive lives.”

The Annual AAKP Patient Meeting is August 9-11 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead. The patient meeting is divided into three educational tracks: chronic kidney disease (CKD)/pre-dialysis, end-stage renal disease (ESRD)/dialysis, and kidney transplantation. This allows participants to design their own meeting experience. The full meeting agenda and registration brochure is on the AAKP website, www.aakp.org/events/convention.

AAKP is kicking off its Annual Patient Meeting with its 2nd Annual AAKP Public Policy Forum. The event takes place August 9 at The Carter Center in Atlanta. This is a free event and it is open to the public.

Haith will address meeting attendees on Aug. 11 from 7 p.m. to  9 p.m. during AAKP’s commencement dinner. For more information on the AAKP Annual Patient Meeting visit www.aakp.org or call 1-800-749-2257.
