The American Nephrology Nurses' Association has released the Core Curriculum for Nephrology Nursing, 6^th Edition.

“The Core not only represents what we know now, but also serves as a springboard for what the learner can become and what nephrology nursing can be,” writes Editor Caroline S. Counts, MSN, RN, CNN, in her preface.

Available in both print and electronic forms, the Core is a 1,576 page publication that includes six modules. It’s designed for nurses and health care professionals at every level and contains a sweeping exploration of nephrology nursing practice, from the basics of each nephrology treatment modality to the nurse’s role in advocacy, patient engagement, evidence-based practice and more.

Counts led a team of 92 health care experts for the writing and blind review of the chapters. During the process, the contents were thoroughly revised and updated and new sections added, including new topics such as leadership and management, caring for veterans, and more emphasis on patient and staff safety.

The Core features 233 figures, 234 tables, and 29 appendices. Self-assessment questions are included at the end of each module. The Core also offers more than 50 contact hours of continuing nursing education credits.

The publication has a comprehensive index for each module, as well as hundreds of references and in-text citations. While the hard copy version refers to other websites, the electronic version contains live links to these websites with additional information for readers.

The Table of Contents lists each module and chapter. Also, ANNA has outlined “What’s New in This Edition” to demonstrate the general updates from the previous 2008 Core that have been applied to every module.
