'Army Wives' Recap: System Failure - Gather.com

On this week's episode of Army Wives, Claudia Joy ends up in the hospital after collapsing at home. Michael picks up Emmalin when she gets word about her mother. The test results show that Claudia Joy is suffering from kidney failure. It was certainly an unexpected diagnosis.

The doctor told the Holden family that Claudia Joy is in total kidney failure and that she will need a kidney transplant. In the meantime, Claudia Joy will need to have dialysis right away until they can find a donor. Right away, Emmalin wants to donate one of her kidneys to her mom. This is no surprise as that girl would do anything for her mother. It was a sweet gesture and cements their mother-daughter relationship. She was even googling all the information she could on dialysis.

Unfortunately, Emmalin was turned down by the doctor as he said that since her mother gotimage diabetes later in her life, there is a good chance that Emmalin would also develop diabetes. He couldn't take that chance since she would need both of her kidneys. She was crushed that she was not able to help her mom.

As Denise happened to be walking by Claudia Joy's room, she finds her crying and goes in to comfort her. It was great to see these two friends reconnecting once again. Although it is not in the best of circumstances, sometimes a crisis is the one thing that brings relationships together. At least Jackie wasn't there to spoil things for these two best friends. Jackie was at a D.C. conference so Denise had no distractions. In fact, Denise decided that she wanted to be tested to see if she was a donor match to give Claudia Joy one of her kidneys. Frank wasn't too thrilled about the idea, however he told his wife that they would talk about it and go from there. When Jackie comes back into town, will she try to dissuade Denise from being a donor for Claudia Joy? Hopefully this lady won't be that mean.

Kellie Martin stars as Captain Galassini who starts a proposal to head up a mission to Africa after an uprising happens. This week also centered around the 30-minute DRB which means that troops can be sent out at a moment's notice without knowing when or where they would be headed. Gloria Cruz heads to the Hump bar to talk to Roxy about what is going on since they had to cancel their travel plans because of the DRB. Roxy gives this new wife some advice on things that she needs to get taken care of like a will and power of attorney while her husband is deployed. It looks like Roxy has come a long way in her role as an army wife.

Tanya has made a choice to take the place of a friend who was supposed to be in that group but she had no one to take care of her daughter while she would be gone. The word is that they will most likely not be called out anyway. However, after things get heated in Africa, everything changes.

As everyone is celebrating Finn's 10th birthday, Trevor gets the call that he is to be deployed right away. Also in that group is Frank, Kevin Clark, and Officer Cruz. The wives say goodbye to their husbands as none of them have any idea where they are flying off to. Denise and Frank always exchange their letters as Denise reads hers at home and Frank reads his as he is in the air. This has always been their tradition and it never gets old.

It looks like Claudia Joy is heading off to her parent's house to get away for a while. How will she handle the treatments and especially her best friend that wants to donate her kidney to her? Stay tuned for the next episode of Army Wives!

New lease of life for Leicester dad after kidney transplant - This is Leicestershire

A Leicester dad whose sister saved his life by giving him a kidney says he can't wait to fulfil a long-held ambition – to play football with his son in the park.

Kalvender Khuman is recovering at home in Leicester following a transplant operation using a kidney donated by his sister, Shindo Mold.

The 48-year-old father-of-three, of Western Park, is itching to get to the park with 12-year-old son Gorvin.

Mr Khuman, 48, said: "It is the one thing that I am most looking forward to when I get fully fit. My son is now 12 and for the last six years I have been ill and had to be in dialysis.

"This meant that I was always too tired to play with him on the park. He is a strapping six-footer now and plays with a team. I want more than anything to be able to knock the ball around with him and be a real dad to him."

Mr Khuman underwent the operation at Leicester General Hospital on March 21.

He said: "Things are looking good. I have so much more energy already, it is amazing.

"Tests show that my sister's kidney, which is inside me, is already working at 80 per cent. When I was first given her kidney it was working at 20 per cent, so I have come a long way in a short time."

Mr Khuman said he thanked his sister for her kidney by giving her a big hug and a kiss.

He said: "I saw Shindo the day after the operation when I was still in the intensive care unit and she burst into tears. I told her I hoped they were tears of joy because she had saved my life.

"Just before she was discharged she came to see me on the ward. I said thank you and hugged her like I had never hugged her before.

"This operation has made us closer as I have a piece of her with me always. I used to call her once a fortnight, but now we are on the phone all the time. It's great."

Mrs Mold, 49, who lives in Leeds and went home three days after the operation, said: "It was the least I could do for my brother.

"I know he would do the same for me. It is great to hear that he is making such good progress."

Mr Khuman's kidneys failed in 1999 after becoming scarred and damaged due to infections in his youth.

After two years of dialysis, he was given a kidney from a person on the organ donor register who had died in an accident.

But after five years of normal life, the new kidney stopped working.

Since then, Mr Khuman has faced six hours of dialysis at home every other day for seven years.

It was only in March last year, when he had a cardiac arrest due to the treatment, that he finally allowed his sister to ask doctors to see if she could be a suitable donor.

The pair found out she was a perfect match just weeks before the swap.

Gorvin, a pupil at Market Bosworth High School, said: "I can't wait to go to the park with dad. It will be so much better than it used to be.

"Now he will have a lot of energy and be able to help me train."

Mrs Mold is coming to Leicester for a check-up in four weeks' time and the family is planning a garden party.

Mr Khuman said: "It is her 50th birthday this year and we are going away to a villa in Majorca for that. But I have got her a special gift for giving me the gift of life. It is surprise and I hope she likes it."

Crews Clear School's Collapsed Ceiling

Construction crews worked overnight Friday to secure a ceiling that collapsed at Long Beach High Schoolearlier in the day.

Peter Wilk, a spokesman from the Brooklyn-based Wilk Marketing Communications, a public relations firm working with a renovation and construction team at LBHS, said in a statement early Saturday morning that crews were working overnight to secure and remove an extended area of suspended stucco ceiling that collapsed inside the ground-floor's east parking area, under the second story of the high school, at about 5:10 p.m. Friday, according to Nassau County Police Department.

The police department’s Emergency Services Unit and Canine Unit and Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene Friday afternoon and reported no injuries at the school, which was closed for spring recess.

Justice Scalia Silent on Healthcare at Breakfast Q&A

It isn’t often that a United States Supreme Court Justice visits Mineola much less when those not admitted to the bar and riding landmark cases get the opportunity to lob questions at them when they step out from under their black robes.

Justice Antonin Scalia was a guest of the Long Island Federalist Society at the Nassau County Bar Association Tuesday morning. His reply to if he thought the Supreme Court would – as President Barack Obama put it – be engaging in “judicial activism” if the affordable health care law was to be struck down?

A simple, curt ‘nope’ according to U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford.

Reconstructionist Temple to Sell Hewlett Building

Congregation Beth Emeth, the only reconstructionist temple on the south shore, will soon sell its building on Franklin Avenue in Hewlett and move to a new location, according to its rabbi.

With more and more Orthodox Jews moving to the Five Towns, other denominations in the area have suffered, and Rabbi Elliot Skiddell said the congregation at its current size could not support the current temple building.

Huntington Shuts Down Wood Chipping Operation

The Town of Huntington got a temporary injunction to shut down a mulching and wood chipping operation in Huntington.

But a manager at the company said it was unnecessary.

The move by the town comes one day after a fire broke out in a 25-foot high mulch pile on the property, located at 1130 West Jericho Turnpike.

The order, signed by a state Supreme Court judge, prevents Big Dougs Enterprises, Indian Head Ranch and Wayne and John Dougal from operating a wood chipping and mulching business at the location.

Huntington Fire Marshal Paul Latuso issued summonses alleging violation of the state fire code for storing and processing compost and for storage and processing without a required emergency plan, and a third summons for an open burning violation, according to a town press release.
