Teleflex to Present at the 52nd European Renal, Dialysis and Transplant ... - Yahoo Finance UK

WAYNE, Pa.--(BUSINESSWIRE)--

Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX), a leading global provider of medical devices for critical care, urology and surgery, will showcase its range of interventional products at the 52nd European Renal, Dialysis and Transplant Congress in London on May 28 - 31, 2015.

During the event, Teleflex will highlight its Arrow® chronic hemodialysis catheter portfolio, which offers both split-tip and step-tip catheters for both retrograde and antegrade insertion techniques.

The Arrow® NextStep® Retrograde and Antegrade product family consists of step-tip catheters that can easily be inserted and tunneled using retrograde or antegrade technique, respectively. These step-tip catheters also have the advantage of split-tip high flow characteristics. The step-tip on these catheters is designed for smooth, over-the-wire transitions during insertions and exchanges. The Arrow® Cannon® II Plus and Arrow Edge® products are split-tip catheters that can be tunneled using retrograde or antegrade technique, respectively.

Teleflex will also anticipate the upcoming availability of the new ARROW-Clark VectorFlow hemodialysis catheter. The ARROW-Clark VectorFlow catheter (available in both retrograde and antegrade insertion platforms) is a symmetrical tip tunneled hemodialysis catheter that is designed to reduce loss of lock solution, give sustained high flows, minimise recirculation and reduce the risk of thrombus accumulation due to platelet activation resulting from shear stress.

Study Suggests Renal Cell Carcinoma Reprograms its Metabolism to Evade ... - Cancer Therapy Advisor

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, believe it may be possible to attack renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in a whole new way.

In a report recently published in the journal Cancer Research they indicate that they were able to use a sophisticated combination of proteomics and metabolomics to show how RCC reprograms its metabolism and evades the immune system.1

The study may be of particular interest because it found that cancer grade has a major impact on this reprogramming.

“We now say if a patient has a grade 3 tumor then it goes better with this therapy.  It has been a one size fits all,” said study investigator Robert Weiss, MD, who is a professor of nephrology and internal medicine at University of California, Davis, and chief of nephrology at the VA Northern California Health System in Sacramento, CA. “The clinical implications are that we may be able to impact those pathways that have been programmed.”

Dr. Weiss said RCC reprograms its environment to minimize the immune response. He and his colleagues made these discoveries by combining proteomics with metabolomics. The proteomic analyses examined how RCC affects levels of different proteins.

The metabolomic studies performed a similar task with metabolites. “Genomics had been around for a while, but the metabolomics is pretty new.  Each one has its own holes, but when you combine them you get a pretty powerful picture,” Dr. Weiss said in an interview with Cancer Therapy Advisor.

He said by combining metabolomics and proteomics it was possible to come up with a ”unified field theory” to look at the metabolites in cancer.

The proteomic analysis showed how RCC increases an enzyme that breaks down the amino acid tryptophan. In turn, the metabolomics studies flagged that tryptophan metabolites suppress the immune system.

A similar story unfolded with glutamine. By manipulating this amino acid, kidney cancer appeared to remove reactive oxygen species (ROS), a key immune system weapon that would usually help destroy the cancer.

Overall, the researchers found that the glutamine metabolism pathway acts to inhibit ROS and tryptophan catabolism is associated with immune suppression. The work points to new therapeutic targets involving the tryptophan and glutamine pathways.

Nigerian Military Opens Dialysis Centre In Abuja - CHANNELS TELEVISION

Military

Nigeria’s Defence Intelligence Agency has opened a Dialysis Centre in Abuja, the oil-rich nation’s capital city.

At the centre’s commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, President Goodluck Jonathan urged operators of military hospitals to represent perfection in the service of humanity.

President Jonathan pledged the government’s continued support for military health institutions, in what he described as their significant role in the society.

The President said: “We will work with you and assist your establishment to succeed. In most countries, the President and his family attend the military hospital whenever they are ill.

“So, they expect that the military hospital should be among the top hospitals and that should be what we should aspire for”.

He also emphasised that a number of Nigerians had kidney-related diseases, lamenting that some had lost their lives as a result of the absence of dialysis machines.

President Jonathan then noted that the military work hard to ensure the nation is secured and must be respected.

He stressed the need for adding that their hospitals must be well equipped.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Rear Admiral Gabriel Okoi, said the establishment of the Dialysis Centre was part of its social responsibility to the nation.

According to him, the Dialysis Centre would serve defence intelligence and other military personnel and the general public.

Alberta issues province-wide fire ban - Hanna Herald

Alberta’s tinderbox conditions have sparked a full fire ban and a blaze that is threatening communities near Slave Lake.

The Municipal District of Lesser Slave River issued an evacuation notice for all residents within 15 km of Mortonville just after 5 p.m. Monday, due to a “serious fire affecting urban residential and commercial properties on the Old Smith Highway.”

A state of local emergency was declared half an hour later.

Officials asked residents to evacuate immediately and make their way to the MD office, where hotel accommodations would be arranged.

The 500-hectare out-of-control wildfire is burning just over 20 km east of Slave Lake.

Slave Lake residents have not been evacuated and the town is not believed to be in danger.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, 29 wildfires were burning in the province, including a 200-hectare wildfire that forced evacuation of approximately 2,000 residents of Wabasca on Sunday night. The fire is deemed out of control, though a team of 50 firefighters kept the blaze from growing Monday afternoon and it is not expected to reach the community, according to a Wildfire Information Officer.

There is no word yet on when residents will be allowed to return home.

Another out-of-control wildfire in northeast Alberta has shut down production of three oilsands projects, halting 233,000 barrels per day of production and burning more than 8,000 hectares.

Cenovus Energy Inc. and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. evacuated staff at two sites near Cold Lake over the weekend as a precaution.

Not under control

Officials said the fire, which started on Friday, would not be able to be brought under control Monday.

Imperial Oil Ltd and Husky Energy also have oilsands projects in the Cold Lake region, and both producers said operations were unaffected but they were monitoring the situation closely.

The full fire ban prohibits all open fires, including campfires in campgrounds or backcountry and random camping areas.

The fire ban includes charcoal briquettes. Portable propane fire pits and gas or propane stoves and barbecues designed for cooking or heating are allowed.

All fire permits are suspended or cancelled and no new fire permits will be issued.

The ban comes as continuing hot, dry weather has elevated the wildfire hazard to high, very high or extreme over most of Alberta.

Hot, dry weather is forecasted to continue for at least another week, threatening to further elevate wildfire hazard.

Since April 1, Alberta has experienced 629 wildfires that have burned 13,098 hectares.

Alberta has deployed more than 1,300 wildland firefighters and approximately 100 aircraft to battle the wildfires already underway, and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec have sent additional resources to Alberta to assist.

The fire ban applies to the province’s Forest Protection Area (FPA). For detailed information about restrictions and locations, check albertafirebans.ca.
