Government Hospital gets dialysis centre - The Hindu

This is the second unit at a GH in the district

Patients need not go to Madurai for treatment of kidney-related problems hereafter as a dialysis centre was inaugurated at the Dindigul Government Hospital at a cost of Rs.15 lakh on Saturday.

The cost of the dialysis machine and the water treatment plant is around Rs. 10 lakh. Two technicians have been deputed to man the centre round the clock. Three patients can be treated per day.

A nephrologist has been deputed for the newly opened Urology Department. Cleaning staff were also deputed for the centre.

The hospital has sought two more machines to meet the growing demand for treatment. Azhagumani (46) of Dindigul was the first patient to benefit from the centre. The centre has been established with allocation from Dindigul MLA K. Balabarathi’s constituency development fund.

Inaugurating the centre, Ms. Balabarathi said that it would benefit poor patients to a great extent.

A new building for pharmacy, constructed at cost of Rs. 39 lakh, and a renovated operation theatre were also declared open. Adequate pharmacists were deputed, Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Ravikala said.

Referring to other development works, she said that sophisticated equipment were purchased for Ophthalmology Department. Cataract surgery through laser and new equipment to detect vision defects would be introduced shortly. More toilet facilities would be created and construction of additional building for more wards was under way. An old rest room would be converted into toilets and separate toilet facilities would be created for other wards, she added.

She said that 42 bogus dispensaries-cum-medical shops, a first-aid centre and one private hospital had so far been closed across the district. The first dialysis centre in the district was set up at the Palani GH with the financial assistance from donors and various clubs.

The Lagos State Government says 496 patients had received treatment since the inauguration of the first ultra-modern Cardiac and Renal Centre in West Africa.

Dr Jide Idris, the Commissioner for Health, gave the success profile of the centre recently while highlighting the success health programmes of the state government in four years.

He said that the centre which was inaugurated in March 2015 had contributed tremendously in the reduction of medical tourism.

“We have been able to carry out renal dialysis, cardiac procedures including two heart surgeries and the patients are all doing great.

“Also, Pacemaker insertions have been carried out since the commissioning of the cardiac and renal centre in the state.

“These are treatments many Nigerians travel abroad and spend millions of naira to have these procedures done and it has serious negative impact on the country`s economy, “ he said.

On the Goitre Control programme which was inaugurated on March 17, 2014, the commissioner said that 67 patients had undergone surgery while 62 patients were awaiting surgery.

He also said that 12 patients were currently on medication due to the abnormal thyroid function.

“In the last one year, through the State`s Limb Deformity Corrective Surgery and Rehabilitation Programme, 65 patients were screened and 17 of them were operated upon and referred for physiotherapy.

“One limb corrective surgery had been carried out, two patients were given wheel chair and 23 are awaiting Orthotic devices.

“Our records for the Cleft and Palate Repair Programme, showed 71 patients between the age three-month and 15-years were screened and 48 surgeries were performed.

“31 lips repair, seven palate repairs and 10 nasal repairs were performed in the last one year, “ he said.

Idris said that the state government would also continue to ensure accessible, affordable and quality healthcare for the residents of the state.
