Renal transplant ICU to reopen in a fortnight - The Hindu

The renal transplant ICU at the Super Speciality Block (SSB) in the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), which has been shut for over a month for maintenance of the air-conditioning system, is expected to resume functioning in two weeks’ time, MCH authorities have said.

Renal patients awaiting transplants, after completing all pre-surgical formalities, have had to go back to dialysis.

The repairs turned out to be complicated. “The coil of the air handling unit of the A/C needed replacement. The representatives of the A/C firm said that it was a custom-made spare, not readily available. Orders had to be placed with the company. They said the standard time for manufacture, delivery and installation was six weeks. We have issued the supply orders and are awaiting the spares,” sources said.

Though there is an annual maintenance contract for the A/C systems, expensive spares – this one costs nearly Rs.3 lakh – are not covered under the contract.

The alternative was to vacate another ICU or have another area converted as ICU, but this was also not possible as other maintenance works are also on in the hospital. “Organ transplant is risky and unless the patient is maintained in a sterile environment, there are possibilities of post-surgical complications or even death,” a transplant surgeon said.

Renal transplant successful - The Hindu

Global Hospitals on Wednesday claimed to have succes-sfully performed incompatible renal transplant on a 24-year-old suffering from chronic kidney failure. The patient had not gotten a suitable blood group matched donor, follo-wing which the hospital took up incompatible renal transp-lantation using plasma-pheresis and Rituximab, said G. Sridhar, chief consultant nephrologist of the hospital.

Renal transplant is rejected in cases where blood groups of patient and the donor do not match. However, recent advances have made succe-ssful transpl-antation possible even without blood group matching, Dr. Sridhar said.

Kidney Dialysis Equipment Market - Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2014 ... - Digital Journal

Persistence Market Research is released upcoming report on title "Kidney Dialysis Equipment Market: Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2014 - 2020".

This press release was orginally distributed by ReleaseWire

New York, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/06/2015 -- The dialysis industry is growing at a significant rate due to increase in the prevalence of organ failure, growing awareness in the field, and rise in adoption rate of dialysis. The dialysis industry encompasses various other industries, including medical devices and health care services. Medical devices include dialysis products and supplies, whereas health care services include dialysis services, which require skilled professionals to execute the process successfully. Kidney dialysis equipment refers to the medical devices that are used for eliminating wastes and unwanted water from the blood. They are used in case of patients with failed or damaged kidney. Various causes of kidney failure include diabetes, hypertension, malaria, glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, long-term exposure to lead, solvents and fuels, jaundice, over consumption of some medications, yellow fever, and others. On the basis of types, kidney dialysis equipment may be classified into hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Two main principles of peritoneal dialysis are Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Continuous Cyclic Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD). Kidney dialysis equipment may be used in dialysis centers, hospitals, or home care settings.

North America, followed by Europe, dominates the global market for kidney dialysis equipment due to the presence of a large aging population and availability of better health care facilities in the region. In addition, there is a high prevalence of kidney diseases in the region. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a public health institute in the U.S., in 2014, more than 20 million people suffered from chronic kidney diseases. Asia is expected to grow at a high rate in the next few years in the global kidney dialysis equipment market. China and India are expected to be the fastest growing markets for kidney dialysis equipment in Asia. Some of the key driving forces for the kidney dialysis equipment market in emerging countries are increasing R&D investment, presence of a large pool of patients, rising government funding, and growing level of awareness among people.

Diseases such as obesity accelerate the incidences of kidney failure. In addition, habits such as smoking lead to an increase in incidences of kidney failure. Increasing patient pool, rising awareness about treatment of kidney malfunction, and improved government funding are some of the key factors driving the global kidney dialysis equipment market. In addition, introduction of safer procedures for renal dialysis is driving the market. However, factors such as the high costs involved and lack of skilled professionals to carry out the process successfully, are restraining the growth of the kidney dialysis equipment market.

Growing demographics and economies in developing countries, such as India and China, are expected to create good opportunities for the global kidney dialysis equipment market. The introduction of some new products with better efficiency is also expected to offer good opportunities for the global kidney dialysis equipment market. Rising number of mergers and acquisitions, new product launches, and increasing number of collaborations and partnerships are some of the latest trends that have been observed in the global kidney dialysis equipment market. Complications associated with kidney dialysis are a challenge for the market. Some of the key companies operating in the kidney dialysis equipment market are Baxter International, Inc., B. Braun Melsungen AG, Sorin Group, and Teleflex Medical. Other companies which have a significant presence in the kidney dialysis equipment market include DaVita, Inc., Nikkiso Co., Ltd., Rockwell Medical Technologies, Inc., Gambro AB, Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KGaA, Asahi Kasei Kuraray Medical Co., Ltd, NxStage Medical, Inc., Aksys Ltd., and Diaverum.

Proteinuria level predicts renal outcome in lupus nephritis - Medical Xpress
Proteinuria level predicts renal outcome in lupus nephritis

(HealthDay)—Proteinuria levels at 12 months are the best predictor of long-term renal outcome in patients with lupus nephritis, according to a study published in the May issue of Arthritis & Rheumatology.

Maria Dall'Era, M.D., from the University of California in San Francisco, and colleagues analyzed data from the Euro-Lupus Nephritis Trial to evaluate the performance of proteinuria, (Cr), and urinary red blood cells (RBCs) as predictors of good long-term renal outcome (defined as a serum Cr value ?1.0 mg/dL) in patients with . Seventy-six were followed for a minimum of seven years.

The researchers found that a proteinuria value of The authors suggest "that urinary RBCs should not be included as a component of clinical trial response criteria in lupus nephritis." One author disclosed financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
